When the Winds Change: Where Is Your Trust?

Tesla owners are in the middle of a cultural firestorm, with some abandoning their once-beloved electric cars because of shifting public opinion about Elon Musk.

This whole situation reminds me just how fickle people can be. One day, a person is celebrated as a visionary; the next, they are vilified. Public approval is about as stable as a house of cards in a windstorm.

And yet, so many of us place our trust in human opinions, social trends, and the approval of others.

The Bible warns us about this kind of misplaced trust. Jeremiah 17:5-8 says:

"Thus says the LORD: ‘Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the LORD. For he shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when good comes, but shall inhabit the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land which is not inhabited. Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, and whose hope is the LORD. For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters, which spreads out its roots by the river, and will not fear when heat comes; but its leaf will be green, and will not be anxious in the year of drought, nor will cease from yielding fruit.’”

This passage paints a clear contrast. Those who trust in human strength and approval are like a dried-up shrub struggling to survive in the wilderness. But those who trust in God are like a flourishing tree, firmly rooted and thriving no matter what storms may come.

We see it everywhere—public figures rise and fall, trends come and go, and social movements shift like the wind. Even our closest friends and family can disappoint us. But God never changes.

Malachi 3:6 reminds us,

“For I am the LORD, I do not change.”

Unlike human praise, which is here today and gone tomorrow, God’s truth remains steady.

If we build our lives on public opinion, we will always be chasing something that can never satisfy. But when we put our trust in the Lord, we have a foundation that cannot be shaken.

So, whether you're driving a Tesla, a Honda, or an old pickup truck, the lesson is the same—don't put your faith in shifting sands. Trust in the One who never changes.
